Food insecurity is an increasing problem across Australia, with many individuals and families struggling to access regular, nutritious meals. Food on the Table, a small not-for-profit organisation based in South Australia, has dedicated itself to tackling this issue. Their simple yet powerful mission – ensuring that “No-One Goes Hungry” – drives their efforts to support those facing homelessness, domestic violence, and anyone in need.
“We strive to provide food for anyone in need,” explains General Manager Roxy Jones.
“Each week, we prepare around 2,500 meals with the help of volunteers, reaching people who might otherwise go hungry.”
With no government funding and just one chef on staff, Food on the Table faces ongoing challenges in meeting demand. Volunteers play a crucial role in meal preparation, yet their ability to scale up operations was hindered by outdated equipment.
“One of our team members was taking home 20–30 aprons every night to wash,” Roxy shares.
“We also desperately needed a commercial deep fryer to increase our food output, and our old, borrowed coffee machine was struggling to keep up with the demands of our function hall, which helps raise funds for the kitchen.”
Thanks to a $5,000 AUD SilverChef Community Grant, the organisation was able to purchase much-needed equipment, including a commercial fryer, a washing machine, and a new coffee machine.
“This grant has made a huge difference,” says Roxy. “It has saved us money and significantly improved our operations.
We can now make more meals safely and efficiently, and the washing machine has taken a huge load off our volunteers.”
Looking ahead, Food on the Table is determined to continue growing its impact. “We aim to increase meal production, expand our reach, and ensure that no South Australian goes without food,” Roxy says. “When we support each other, there’s nothing we cannot achieve.”
