Down The Track works with some of the most disadvantaged young people in Lake Cargelligo and Murrin Bridge, NSW - a remote community of around 1,300 people, where 98% of the young people they support are Aboriginal. Their mission is simple but ambitious.
"We want to strengthen the young people of our community to achieve their hopes and dreams, with no young person left behind."
Down The Track provides training, education, employment pathways and connection to community and country for young people who might otherwise be disengaged. In the past 12 months alone, the team has supported 22 young people into employment, run 15 training courses, and helped several young people gain their driver's licences.
Through the SilverChef Community Grant, Down The Track equipped their newest initiative - Trackin' Good, a social enterprise café that started life as a mobile food van and has since grown into a fully-fledged café for the community.
The grant funded the essentials: a soup kettle, rice cooker, dehydrator, hot water urn, toaster and a handful of small appliances, everything needed to get a commercial kitchen up and running!
The equipment is now in daily use, moving between catering events and the café itself. For a team already juggling a lot, reliability matters.
"Catering is stressful enough. The equipment is such good quality - it provides peace of mind that it will work and perform as well, and gives us exactly what we need to service an event."
Every dollar Trackin' Good generates goes straight back into Down The Track's youth programs, so more reliable equipment means more capacity to cater, more consistency for the team, and more opportunity flowing back to local young people. As Trackin' Good has scaled, so has Down The Track's ability to offer employment, training and work experience - with the added benefit of giving their remote community a large-scale catering option it didn't have before, and bringing new volunteers into the fold along the way.
This is a repeat grant for Down The Track — SilverChef previously helped set up their original food trailer, which laid the groundwork for Trackin' Good's growth into a café.
