The best of the west

Posted on 27 october 2017

From restaurants and bars to nightclubs and everything in between, Perth is basically the smaller version of a bustling larger world city hub. Whether you’re looking for inspiration or just simply doing some essential market research – here’s a look at some of our customers pioneering the Perth hospo scene.

Old Faithful

@oldfaithfulbar

As Perth’s first foray into traditional American BBQ, local foodie Gail Williams described Old Faithful as a “food truck without the wheels”. With a casual vibe and food designed to be licked off fingers, there’s no pretense in this establishment. Influenced by America’s famous low-and-slow cooking style, Old Faithful combines traditional American BBQ flavours with Australian native spices supporting only local producers and suppliers. Knowing that good things come to those who wait, the meats are then smoked between 18 to 26 hours, using a combination of beech, hickory, and coal. Vegetarians, no need to worry – they cater for a wide variety of dietary needs so you won’t be leaving hungry.

The Moon

@themooncafe

First opening more than 25 years ago, The Moon Café is an institution in Perth’s late night scene. Housed in a 1930s building with an art deco/op shop interior to match, this former cabaret venue is the definition of kitsch. Trading with a restaurant liquor license, drinks must be served with food after 5pm, and the generous portion sizes go beyond regulation. The menu is simple but tasty, featuring pizza, pasta and burgers as their staples, along with some stellar sweets, including dessert pizza! But if you’re more an ‘early bird’ than a ‘night owl’, you can catch brunch from 10am on weekends.

Johnny’s Burger Joint

@JohnnysBurgerJoint

An unassuming strip of shops in suburbia might just be the place to find Perth’s best burgers. Owner Johnny Wong’s philosophy is real food, done right. While the décor might be minimalist and light, the food is anything but. Here, you’ll find BIG, authentic American burgers with BIG attitude. “The Cure” has a bacon patty that will allegedly ‘treat’ vegetarianism, while “Dracula’s Dilemma” has a double header of garlic butter and garlic mayo. Paired with curly fries, milkshakes, imported sodas or wings and you’ve got yourself a legendary American burger experience. If you consider yourself a burger master, you can take up one of Johnny’s famous eating challenges: the 4-kilogram Burgerzilla challenge or the Demon’s Revenge, a burger that’s 1,200 times hotter than a jalapeno. We’ve got the sweats just thinking about it!

Tetsuo Night Club

@Tetsuonc

One of Perth’s newest late-night venues, Tetsuo is a combination of world-class sound and lighting in a ‘90s Japanese grunge culture setting. The venue is comprised of two rooms: the Main Room and the Boiler Room, both equipped with bars, live music stages, plus a selection of quirky and interactive authentic Japanese décor. The music is not genre specific, so make sure you check the upcoming gig guide, or just take your chances; you never know, you may be surprised!
